Speak to the House Speak to the Object by Camillie Casemier and Selena Kearney

An essay performed for a live audience that weaves together our individual photographic works, capturing contrasting perspectives on the evolving situation at the Field Museum following the NAGPRA update of January 2024. Through spoken texts, we articulate our distinct positions within the research, exploring how our respective heritages shaped and mediated our access to the museum’s spaces and collections. Central to the performance is a transmission—a gesture of connection and reverence—to sacred Coast Salish objects held within the museum.

Camille Casemier is a Chicago based artist whose work unpacks the cultural rituals of collecting and display through embodied, object-centered inquiry often given form by cameras and audiences. Trained in dance at The New School and shaped by her time with Bread and Puppet, she brings a physical sensitivity to the life of objects and the spaces they move through. She spends her days working at a resale shop, where she continues her research into the cultural narratives of accumulation.
